Today is National Waffle Iron day. The waffle iron dates back to the 14th century, used in lower countries where they would often put designs of their coats of arms and religious symbols. However, the official patent wasn’t established until 1869! In 1911 General Electric created a prototype, and in 1918 the first waffle iron was available for purchase to the general public.
A little fun fact: “Nike Co-Founder Bill Bowerman, an Oregon Track Coach at the time, used his wife’s waffle iron to create a sole for footwear that would be light weight but also grip a surface. This design would soon be called the “Moon Shoe” in 1972 and the “Waffle Trainer” in 1974. His waffle iron shoe helped spur the growth of Blue Ribbon Sports / Nike.” -National Day Calendar.com
