A Dream Come True!

A Dream Come True!

In Bart’s Escape Out the Gate, I literally made my dream come true. Bart was a dream that I had about a pet dinosaur getting loose.

We lived on 16 acres off of a country road when my kids were younger. We had 5 horses, 3 pigs, 2 goats, 2 lambs,3 dogs, lots of barn cats, 2 ferrets, and a partridge in a pear tree.

There was a nightly feeding by someone in our house every night because we would take turns. Sometimes the kids had too much homework so the chores might have fallen on my husband from time to time.

I am not one to complain when my husband does chores because after all, he is working hard to make sure the family is taken care of…. But….. he kept leaving the lock undone on the pasture gate.

The next morning we would get calls to come get our animals from the neighbor’s house. The horses would be grazing on their nice green lawn, the pigs would have rooted up their flowers, and one time the ferret had crawled into their dryer vent. They were very surprised to see his little head peeking out at them as they were getting ready to do laundry.

After a few times of this roundup, I quietly would go check the gate on the nights my husband did the feeding; that is except this one night.

I was extremely tired and had tucked myself into a nice warm bed when I realized that I did not check the gate that night. I could not bring myself to get up from those warm blankets to trudge out into the cold night air to check the gate.

I drifted in and out of sleep with the gate latch on my mind as I woke up with a terrible dream. Our pet dinosaur had escaped out the gate.

Our horses were running and falling. They were talking in my dream too. One, Laredo, had broken his leg and was saying, “help me I am hurt, he’s going to kill us all.”

The pigs were squealing while the dinosaur chased them. Cats were screeching, dogs barking, and the dino was growling.

I was in a cold sweat when I woke up and realized it was a dream.  I quickly threw on a coat to go out to the pasture to check the gate and found it securely fastened.

I have remembered that dream all these years and was telling it to a young father that lived in the country. He said, “You should write a book about that. My kids would love that story.”

So I did.
